The Discipline of Authentic Movement from an Integrative Perspective*
*An advanced workshop only for practitioners working in the field.
What is the workshop about?
Pioneered by Mary Starks Whitehouse in California, Authentic Movement enables a direct connection to the depths of our unconscious, accessing the rich resources of our intuitive wisdom expressed through the embodied word, feeling, thoughts, image, sensation and relationship as well as through natural, rejuvenating movement.
Founded on Jung’s concept of the active imagination and the collective unconscious, Authentic Movement (AM) is an approach used in dance movement therapy where symbolic meaning is seen in physical expression. The two roles of a speaking witness and a mover can be supplemented with a third role, that of the silent witness.
The Discipline of Authentic Movement (Adler, 2002) can be understood from several perspectives; for example, Jungian thought and transpersonal psychotherapy, humanistic psychology and person-centred psychotherapy and from elements of psychodynamic psychotherapy. Participants will explore how the practice of AM can be viewed from each of these approaches and the role that languaging of the movement experience can contribute to the transformational process.
You will learn how an integrative approach can support the theory and practice of AM; the differences between one to one and group work in AM and the role of the silent witness in each. You will better understand how AM can be employed for individual and group psychotherapy and gain further knowledge of the foundations involved in the practice. Furthermore, you will learn how to develop the skills of self-referential languaging as a witness and of moving mindfully as a mover by fully inhabiting in each of the three roles.
Helen employs an integrative approach to AM resulting in a safe, self-directed, non-judgemental and empathic framework. Participants learn to dwell more easily in their bodies, and to engage creatively with a direct experience of the self beyond words and concepts.
